Jesus Poster Christian

I've consulted dictionaries, but the use of the phrase "believes in" means (eg. believes in God, Jesus)?

I have seen several posts with an interesting rhetorical strategy:

The poster will say that "the devil/Satan 'believes in' God"

Does this mean that he simply believes that God exists?

Or do they (Satan and his legions) truly believe IN God, just like theists believe IN God and Christians believe IN Jesus?

This is also used as a defense that belief IN God is not sufficient to gain entry into heaven: Satan believes IN God but cannot go to Heaven. So I am led to believe that Satan may believe IN God the same way that theists do.

Doesn't saying "believe in" imply more than just a "belief of" something? I'm not playing semantic games here; I really would like to know.
Is "believes in" then different than "having faith in"?

It is almost purely semantics.

Someone might say, "I believe in unicorns."

This definitely means "existence".

Christians say, "Even satan believes in God."

Same thing. This means that satan believes God exists. In fact, satan KNOWS God exists.

I'm a linguist and a stickler for semantics. If you're going to say something, you'd better know what your words mean.

If someone says to me, "I believe in God," then they might very well MEAN something much deeper than they've just said, but the fact remains that the LANGUAGE they use is insufficient to convey the depth of their meaning.

Compare communication to any skill, say playing chess. If one person who knows how the peices move plays against someone who has a thorough understanding of opening theory, pawn structure, tactics, strategy, and endgame theory, who is going to win? Obviously the person with more tools in his shed is better at the game. Same thing applies to football, art, music, surgery, plumbing, etc...

So, a person with a limited vocabulary will not always be able to communicate their thoughts as effectively as a person with a vast vocabulary and mastery of grammar.

"Belief in God" is not the same as "acceptance of Jesus"

Secret Jesus Bible Codes

Is it any surprise that Christians are manufacturing the death machines for the U.S. military?

Apparently, profiting from war doesn't bother these people of "peace" and "love". But then, has history given us a reason to think it ever did?

"Death machines"?

You really need to get a life.

Jesus Poems Poetry

Edgar Lee Masters-The Village Atheist?

I am doing a poetry project for english..and i just happened to pick Edgar Lee Masters...and his poestry is freakin hard.
we have to pick 3 poems and explicate them..or...pick out the meaning....can someone help me with this one?

THE VILLAGE ATHEIST

YE young debaters over the doctrine
Of the soul’s immortality,
I who lie here was the village atheist,
Talkative, contentious, versed in the arguments
Of the infidels. 5
But through a long sickness
Coughing myself to death
I read the Upanishads and the poetry of Jesus.
And they lighted a torch of hope and intuition
And desire which the Shadow, 10
Leading me swiftly through the caverns of darkness,
Could not extinguish.
Listen to me, ye who live in the senses
And think through the senses only:
Immortality is not a gift, 15
Immortality is an achievement;
And only those who strive mightily
Shall possess it.

No , his poetry is anything but hard. He writes in a very simple style - basically the dead people in the cemetary talking to people passing by. Not hard at all. The particular poem you chose is a little tough. Are you locked into it because I can tell you better one. I know the book intimately.

This is basically the same concept that John Lennon was talking about when he said "God is a concept by which we measure our pain". That the more we are in pain the more we NEED God and believe in him.

This man was an altheist. However when he found himself sick and dying, he suddenly turned to religion - reading not only the works of Christianity but of other religions too. These words stirred him and stayed with him as he was led by "The Shadow" to his death. His message for people who are alive and living "through the senses only" - only believing in what they can see, hear, taste, smell and see is that immortality is an achievement and only those who strive mightly shall possess it - He is not referring to physical immortality but spiritual immortality - the belief that the soul goes on after life. What you should note about this poem is that like most of the others, we do not know this man's name. Why? Because he doesnt feel he earned immortality - or his name on a headstone for everyone to remember. Spirituality came too late for him. He isnt immortalized by a headstone with his name on it. He is just the anonymous village atheist. See??

As I said I am kind of an expert on Spoon River. I first came across it at the age of 16 when I auditioned for a local production of the play and was accepted. I performed many performanced of it, and it has never ever left me. Spoon River enters your soul and dwells there forever once you let it. If you need help choosing other poems - you can write me at deni913@hotmail.com - Pax - C

Jesus Prayer Life

Did you know that tomorrow we are to remember by worship and/or prayer, The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus?

It is a very special opportunity to surrender yourself to the truth, the life, and the way. All you have to do to get started is say Jesus I love you, I thank you, and I'm sorry for my sins. Will you please give it a try? Peace to you.

Yes, it's a very special Day for me and the Prayer Group to which I belong.'The People of the Heart of Jesus'
We venerate the Sacred Heart of Jesus which is the symbol of Jesus' eternal love for his Father, and the source of the love and life he shares with all his brothers and sisters.
Jesus knew and loved us each and all during his life, his agony and his Passion, and gave himself up for each one of us."The Son of God.....loved me and gave himself for me." (Gal 2:20). He loved us all with a human heart. For this reason, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pierced for our sins and for our salvation,is quite rightly considered the chief sign and symbol of that love with which the divine Redeemer continually loves the Eternal Father and all human beings without exception." ( Catechism of the Catholic Church,478).

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus I place all my trust in you. Amen

Jesus Bible Homosexuality

Does this bible verse show that homosexuality is okay with Jesus?

Mark 7:14: Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' BY GOING INTO HIM. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.'

No. This is talking about what a man eats.

Free Jesus Bible Studies

do you realize that when you accept Jesus and are born again that you are NO LONGER a sinner ?

a sinner is a sinner by nature so when a person receives Jesus his nature is changed and so BY NATURE (GODS NATURE) HE OR SHE IS NO LONGER A SINNER. They may sin but that does not make them a sinner... you are instantly madel the righteousness of God. you might bark but that does not make you a dog. so in the same way when you have received Jesus you are freed from the sin nature and though you do fall and sin you are still Gods child and He loves you and will correct you but you have not lost your salvation. you can NOT be a "saved sinner " you are either a sinner or you are saved! period. study your bible.

Your assuming that old dusty book is true.

Jesus Fish Symbolism

Christians...why is it a fish?

The Jesus fixtures that Christians put on their car, why is it a fish? What is the symbolism? I have heard different theories, except the Christian one. thanx

The history of the Christian fish symbol:
The fish outline is a logical symbol for the early Christian church to adopt. Fish are often mentioned in the gospels. This is what one would expect, if Jesus did most of his teaching in the Galilee. The synoptic gospels state this, although the Gospel of John denies it. Fish were a staple in the diet of Galilee.

Some gospel verses which mention fish are:

Mark 1:17: "Come after Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."
Matthew 12:40: "...Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."
Matthew 14:17: "And they said to Him, 'We have here only five loaves and two fish.'"
Luke 5:6: "And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking."
Luke 24:42: "So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb."
John 21:6: "And He said to them, 'Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.' So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish."
1 Corinthians 15:39: "All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fish, and another of birds."

Some Christians believe that a second link between their religion and the fish symbol is seen in the Greek word for fish (ichthus, spelled: Iota Chi Theta Upsilon Sigma). That is an acrostic which has many translations in English. The most popular appears to be "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior" 16 [Iesous (Jesus) CHristos (Christ) THeou (God) Uiou (Son) Soter (Savior)]. Alternative meanings (in order of decreasing popularity on the Internet) are:

"Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior."
"Jesus Christ, of God, the Son, the Savior"
"Jesus Christ, the Son of God, Savior."
"Jesus Christ, God's Son, our Savior"
"Jesus Christ God Son Savior"

An acrostic is an "arrangement of words in which the first letter of each line ordinarily combines with others to form a word or words or the alphabet." 1

The Apostles were often referred to as "fishers of men". Followers of Christianity were called Pisciculi; the root of this Latin word is "fish". The symbols of "sacremental fish, with wine and a basket of bread represents the Eucharist and the Last Supper in Christian art." 2 The symbol was simple to draw and was often used among Christians as a type of password during times of persecution by the Roman government. If two strangers met and were unsure whether each other was a Christian, one would draw an arc in the earth like:). If the other were a Christian, they would complete the symbol with a reverse arc: (), forming the outline of a fish.

In modern times, the fish outline symbol is experiencing a comeback. It is commonly seen in the form of a bumper sticker or casting mounted on the trunk lids of cars. The body of the symbol may be empty, or may contain a name ("Jesus" or "ICTUS"). This has inspired some Secularists, Atheists and promoters of the theory of evolution to mimic the Christian fish symbol with one of their own. It usually has "DARWIN" in the body of the fish, and little legs underneath. This has prompted "fish wars" between supporters of the secular and religious symbols. Reference 3 contains a humorous expose of the battle between the Darwin and Christian fish. It displays some new species such as the "Evolve Fish" (a fish with "EVOLVE" on its body and a wrench in one of its forepaws) and the "Shark Jesus Fish" (a shark that eats all types of Jesus Fish).

We were asked by a visitor to our web site whether the orientation of the fish symbol was important. He was about to have it inlaid into a very expensive instrument. We surfed a few dozen web sites on the Internet and found dozens of Ichthus symbols:

13 facing upwards
11 facing to the left
10 facing to the right
None facing downwards.

We also found a satirical essay "Experts concerned about backward Jesus fishes" which suggested, with tongue in cheek, that fish swimming to the right is "a duplicitous tool of Satan, the Lord of Lies...Our children are viewing these fish and are losing their grip on morality....These backwards fishes, and all their inherent evils could destroy a society." 13

The most meaningful orientation is probably to have the fish swimming to the left, as is shown above. The symbol then resembles the first letter of the Greek alphabet, alpha. That recalls Revelation 1:8:

" I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty." (King James Version).

The pre-Christian history of the fish symbol:
The fish symbol has been used for millennia worldwide as a religious symbol associated with the Pagan Great Mother Goddess. It is the outline of her vulva. The fish symbol was often drawn by overlapping two very thin crescent moons. One represented the crescent shortly before the new moon; the other shortly after, when the moon is just visible. The Moon is the heavenly body that has long been associated with the Goddess, just as the sun is a symbol of the God.

The link between the Goddess and fish was found in various areas of the ancient world:

In China, Great Mother Kwan-yin often portrayed in the shape of a fish
In India, the Goddess Kali was called the "fish-eyed one"
In Egypt, Isis was called the Great Fish of the Abyss
In Greece the Greek word "delphos" meant both fish and womb. The word is derived from the location of the ancient Oracle at Delphi who worshipped the original fish goddess, Themis. The later fish Goddess, Aphrodite Salacia, was worshipped by her followers on her sacred day, Friday. They ate fish and engaging in orgies. From her name comes the English word "salacious" which means lustful or obscene. Also from her name comes the name of our fourth month, April. In later centuries, the Christian church adsorbed this tradition by requiring the faithful to eat fish on Friday - a tradition that was only recently abandoned.
In ancient Rome Friday is called "dies veneris" or Day of Venus, the Pagan Goddess of Love.
Throughout the Mediterranean, mystery religions used fish, wine and bread for their sacramental meal.
In Scandinavia, the Great Goddess was named Freya; fish were eaten in her honor. The 6th day of the week was named "Friday" after her.
In the Middle East, the Great Goddess of Ephesus was portrayed as a woman with a fish amulet over her genitals.

The fish symbol "was so revered throughout the Roman empire that Christian authorities insisted on taking it over, with extensive revision of myths to deny its earlier female-genital meanings...Sometimes the Christ child was portrayed inside the vesica, which was superimposed on Mary's belly and obviously represented her womb, just as in the ancient symbolism of the Goddess." 4 Another author writes: "The fish headdress of the priests of Ea [a Sumero-Semitic God] later became the miter of the Christian bishops." 5

The symbol itself, the eating of fish on Friday and the association of the symbol with deity were all taken over by the early Church from Pagan sources. Only the sexual component was deleted.

Jesus Quotes Poor

Why is it when libs quote jesus they think jesus said to steal from the rich and give to the poor?

Jesus said yes to give to the poor but through charity. Not theft. Why is this so hard for liberals to understand?

Because libs are master revisionists. They like to revise the bible to fit their agenda just like they like to revise history to do the same

Did Jesus Exist Dvd

The biblie is an evidence that Jesus Existed, Writing was the only proof back then, what else would you expect?

A DVD blue ray, showing Jesus miracles?

They did not have video recording cameras in those times? so The Bible is a set of Books, I think is a good evidence for christianity.

Oh yeah ask atheists and non-believers, they prefer to believe in the Mayan or Chinese calendars for their own convenience!

and the Bible, Oh no that's not true!
WHAT CONTEMPORARY EVIDENCES DO YOU EXPECT?

I have a book that says an actual monster lives in a galaxy far, far away and he rules the Universe.

The person who wrote it swears up and down that the green monster exists and there are people who are actually following the book.

Tell me, is that evidence for the green monster? The book itself should be, right? Because that's what you're claiming.

Jesus Culture Dvd

Questions about post second-coming life?

A few things about what the bible says will happen after Jesus comes again don't add up for me. Was wondering if anyone can explain.

-Is the book of life an actual book? Why can't it be a laptop, or DVD of life?
-Why will everyone wear crowns and walk on streets of gold? Some fashion minded people may consider this a bit gaudy.
-Will Heaven be broken up and diversified? People like to live in areas that exhibit their own culture (clothing, architecture, etc.). Will there be a Heavenly Chinatown? Will there be forced hegemony?
-When people return to the new Earth, will there still be deserts? Deserts are, by and large, harsh regions in which humans must struggle to live.. but millions have lived there and consider them beautiful.
-Will there be sports? How do you lose a game if you're perfect?

If your only response is a variation of "These are just details that don't really matter," then please leave the posting to people who actually think about what they believe in

I don't mean to waste your time with my total lack of an answer, but I just wanted to say that this is a pretty cool question. I never really though about it in quite this way before, but I love this sort of thing. I will definitely be giving it a lot of thought in the future!

Jesus Papers Michael Baigent

Is christianity an heretical combination of Gnosticism and Judaism as suggested by Michael Baigent in The?

Jesus Papers?

Actually there is nothing Jewish at all about Christianity. Christianity is more a mix of Greek and Egyptian paganism as well as Mithra...........with Jewish names.

Military Jesus Guns

Would Jesus advocate gun ownership, privatized health insurance and excessive military spending?

Of course he would-after all, does God not Bless America? Son and Father are the same deal, so God is clearly an all American, gun toting, commie bashing, burger eating super deity, who looks like Spottswoode from Team America and drives a 7-litre version of the GMC Yukon SUV (called the Super Freedom Sweet Ass Truck God Bless America Edition Hammertime RAAAAAAAA!)

PS, I saw you blocked rayhere because of his threats. I got so fed up his b1tchy 'threats' that I gave him my home address and told him to drop by any time he was in Canada, so he could threaten me to my face. He has been strangely muted since then. Also, don't be afraid to point out to him that he is married to a Thai girl, who he undoubtedly met via a Mail Order Bride Agency, and who was probably underage too. Or a ladyboy.
